About
Artem Proot
Born 1987, in Zaporizhia.
Lives and works in Kyiv.
In 2003-2004, as a teenager, he became interested in street art and skateboarding. Then he began to draw his characters and skateboard designs.
Not having a higher education, because he dropped out of university after three months, he began working in online advertising as a designer.
In 2011, he quit his job in an office in order to begin his artistic career.
In 2012, the first solo exhibition of Celebra took place in Kyiv.
In the period from 2011 to 2017, he continued and developed the themes that he began to draw in 2004-2005, returning to where he started, but with new experience. He created several series of works: Celebra, Hydra, Girls in danger, Sexplotaition, etc.
The second period of creativity is 2017-2021. Where the artist changes the themes of his works and the color scheme. Characters are replaced by deserted landscapes, interiors, exteriors, various sports grounds, skate spots, as well as animals, in particular dogs.
In 2021, the third period of creativity begins - the New Period. The artist changes the technique and style, visually, these are other works that have become more minimalist, and from a different angle. Although the motifs from the previous period are preserved, new series of works also appear. The series with tennis courts, these are very characteristic works for the New Period - minimalist, and fragmentary, where the depicted object is shown close up, and multilayered textures are visible. Due to the colors, the artist tries to convey the mood and atmosphere, and the minimalist style gives the viewer a wider field for thoughts and reflections, this is what the author strives for.
In 2024, the website Artsy, during the Olympics in Paris, placed one of the works with tennis courts on the cover of its website, and added Artem Proot to the collection of works by artists on the theme of sports, which included such names as: Alex Katz, Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Raymond Pettibon, James Ulmer, Slim Aarons, Massimo Vitali.
